This mead is a tribute to Mechel Löw, who was the uncle of our cofounder, William Loew.

Produced in 2023. A dry cyser (pronounced sigh-zer) blend of local apple cider, wildflower and clover honey.

As part of the tribute series, each of the Loew descendants has the opportunity to help Rachel produce a mead in honor of one of the Löw family members. This series provides us the chance to share stories of the family members whose lives were affected by the horrors of the Holocaust, bringing their story forward in a unique and meaningful way.

This mead was produced with help of Rachel’s cousin, Michael, who chose to name this mead in tribute to Mechel. When asked why he chose to name this mead Mechel, he wrote:

“Continuing the tradition of making meads, I decided to honor Mechel who was my grandfather, William Loew’s uncle. Mechel was one of nine brother’s of William’s father, Hersh Eisig Löw. The families were close, as Mechel owned his own meadery across the street from William’s family home and meadery. Mechel was a prominent figure in the community and his meadery was very successful in Lwow. Adding to Mechel’s accomplishments, he was a leader in the local councils and served in a similar role as a mayor. It is an honor to continue this mead making tradition going back more than 150 years.”
