The Romance of Spring at the Vineyard

 
 

Contrary to popular belief, there isn’t much romance in growing grapes or making wine. In fact, most of the time, it’s the exact opposite. Growing grapes is full of manual labor, skilled pruning of the vines, and insects. Making wine is also a lot of manual labor, transferring of liquids, cleaning, and paperwork.

However, this is one of my favorite times in the vineyard. The vineyard has started to wake from its winter dormancy, meaning that the buds and leaves are starting to come out. Spring, although anxiety provoking with threats of frost that could kill the new growth and affect a harvest, is beautiful with signs of hope and life. So, maybe there is some romance in winemaking after all.

Our vineyard has been going through a lot of changes over the past couple of years. We have been rebuilding our wine program through varieties we’ve replaced. By the end of May, almost all of the empty spaces in our vineyard will be fully planted with existing and a new variety called Blaufrankisch (red variety with Austrian heritage). Blaufrankisch is exciting because of its versatility in the winery. We will be able to make light and bright rosés and food friendly red wines from this variety.

We encourage visitors to enjoy a glass of wine while strolling through the rows of the vineyard. With each week, the vineyard becomes more green and lush with new growth.
