Preparing For a Historic Vintage
We’re a small winery with big goals.
Crafting exceptional meads and wines is a way for us to honor and continue our family’s distinctive legacy. Over the past three years, we’ve named meads in honor of the Löw family members, bringing their memory to life and to share with each of you.
The Löw family produced Kosher meads in Poland for decades until the start of WWII. To fully embrace our family’s heritage, we decided it would be an important next step to produce Kosher wines and meads under two separate Kosher certifications. With these certifications, we will become the first and only Kosher wine and mead producers in the DMV area.
We wouldn’t have considered this process had it meant that our quality of wine and mead would be at risk. Our wines and meads are already being produced with ingredients that comply with Kosher guidelines. So, actually, the way we produce our wines and meads will not change once we Kasher our equipment and follow the rabbinical guidelines. Our wines and meads will soon be accessible to all wine consumers—kosher and non-kosher!
What does Kosher wine and mead entail?
Kosher products are foods and beverages that comply with Jewish dietary laws, known as kashrut. These laws outline which foods are permitted and how they must be prepared, processed, and consumed. Kosher rules prohibit certain animals, such as pork and shellfish, and require that meat and dairy products not be mixed. Kosher certification agencies inspect and verify that products meet these standards, often labeling them with a recognizable symbol, such as a "K" or "OU," to indicate their compliance. There are different levels of certifications depending on the religious level of the Rabbi who provides the hechsher (the rabbinical term or symbol that is used to signify a Kosher product) for the products. For example, a Conservative Rabbi may have different requirements than an Orthodox Rabbi.
Our plan is to produce our Kosher wines and meads produced with grapes under a conservative hechsher — supervised by Rabbi Hersh of Beth Sholom Congregation in Frederick, Maryland. Our meads without grapes will be produced under the supervision of Star-K which is a certification under an Orthodox supervision—and internationally recognized.
We have a lot of work ahead of us before the upcoming vintage including bottling all of the wines and meads we produced in 2024.
Producing Kosher products is truly historic for us, our county, state, and region. Our legacy of wine and mead production remains strong and intertwined in everything we do.
